SALLY VELASQUEZ ANTE LEE was born in Lapog, Ilocos Sur, on July 26, 1942. Since settling down in Sorsogon in 1966, however, she has lived the life of a Sorsoganon.
A certified public accountant by profession, Mrs. Lee is known for her community involvement, particularly in evangelization and social work. As the wife of the Provincial Governor of Sorsogon, she has been exposed to politics since the 1970s when her husband won as Mayor of the then Municipality of Sorsogon, Over the years, her role as first lady of the province has likewise opened her eyes to the many problems besetting Sorsogon, and in her own way did her best to address such.
Despite all these, running for public office was never an option until the May 14, 2001 elections, when she vied for the position of city mayor and was eventually proclaimed the winning candidate. Mayor Lee thus holds the distinction of being the first city mayor and Sorsogon’s first ever lady mayor since its creation as a political unit in 1894.
During her first two terms as City Mayor Mayor Lee strived to transform Sorsogon City into a progressive and clean city. With Mauswag na Ciudad, Malinig na Lugar as her service guide, she instituted innovative development-oriented programs that zeroed in restoring a culture of dignity in Sorsogon. Among these are the Character First Development Program, Project SERVE (which brought basic services direct to the barangays) and the Mauswag na Ciudad Integrated Health Services, which was named Best Practice by the League of Cities of the Philippines in 2005. She also made a name for Sorsogon by networking and linkaging with international and national agencies and funding institutions. It was also during her term that the City Hall was constructed.
In 2007, she took over the reins of the Provincial Government. As Governor, she laid the groundwork for various programs that eventually led to the coveted DILG Seal of Good Housekeeping for the Province of Sorsogon.
Now back at the helm of the City Government, Mayor Lee hopes to follow through on her development agenda for Sorsogon City.
